Powerful torrential rains and thunderstorms hit Ghizar District of Gilgit-Baltistan

Gahkuch — Severe lighting and thunderstorm has hit the Single Valley of Ghizar District in Gilgit-Baltistan, causing severe mudslide downstream. The powerful lighting hit the valley gorge (Nala) at about 7.10 A.M, immediately spurring flood in the stream.

The rising water in the stream immediately impelled off route mudslide that has inflicted widespread damage to standing crops, trees and other property in Single. The connecting bridges on the stream have been toppled by the flood.

Reports also confirmed that the power supply to the district headquarter has been dismantled, for the floods have washed out water supply channel along the river to the main power house in Single. Ghizar-Shandur road also has been deranged.

Rising level of torrential flood in the small streams in parts of Ghizar has increased the water level in Ghizar River, posing risk to the Ghizar road and adjacent properties.

Ghizar Deputy Commissioner (DC) and other officials have arrived on the spot to analyse and restore the situation.  The power to the district headquarters, Gahkuch, is cut off currently and, efforts are being made to restore the power.
